Summary of Volunteer Opportunities:

  • Charity Shop Assistant – This role is based at our two East Kilbride shops or our Hamilton shop. The role includes customer service, shop front and stock control
  • Warehouse Stock Assistant – This role is based at our new industrial unit.   This is the main storage and sorting depot for all donations to the hospice and the role includes, sorting, preparation and pricing of donations for sale.
  • Drivers – This role involves working within the charity shops and warehouse to uplift and distribute stock.
  • Office Support / Administration / Reception – This role provides direction to all patients, carers and visitors as well as supporting the administration team with phone calls and correspondence.
  • Events and Fundraising Support – This is a flexible ad hoc role to assist with the various events and initiatives to raise funds for the hospice. A friendly outgoing attitude is required as the role involves approaching the public while at stalls, can collections and other events.
  • Befriender – This role provides a listening ear and support to patients and carers in their own homes
  • Drop In – This role includes providing direction to all patients, carers and visitors when they arrive at the hospice, organising refreshments, listening and providing support and information as required.
  • Hairdressers – This role is about providing hairdressing to our patients and carers in our purpose built hairdressing salon within the hospice. Qualified hairdressers are required for this role preferably with experience of working with those whose hair has been affected by life limiting illnesses
  • Complementary Therapists – Therapists qualified in a variety of areas are required to provide our patients with a range of treatments depending on their needs and preferences. We specifically require therapists with qualifications in aromatherapy massage, Indian head massage and reflexology.
  • Day Services – Working alongside our nurses and complementary therapists, this role will assist patients by listening, preparing and serving meals, and supporting their needs.  

Our hospice services currently run Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. We will soon, however, also need support in the evenings and weekends. Our shop roles require support 7 days a week from 9am to 6pm. Many of our fundraising roles are more ad hoc, providing support as and when different events and opportunities arise. Please get in touch to chat about which role might suit you best.

    Kilbryde Hospice Volunteer Catering Assistant

    Kilbryde Hospice has a volunteer run Kafe located in our Drop In area. This Kafe, run by a fabulous team of volunteers allows us to welcome people and their families into our hospice. Sometimes many concerns can be dealt with over a cuppa and with your help we can continue to provide this service and raise vital funds.

    What are we looking for?

    The role

    The role of volunteer catering assistant focuses on helping the cook with the preparation of soup, snacks and home baking within the Kafe area. On occasions you may be asked to assist with fundraising catering.

    Specifically our Volunteer Catering Assistants will be expected to:

    Follow hygiene standards and guidelines. (REHIS trained preferably but training is available

    • Assisting with food preparation and serving, making of sandwiches and snacks from a limited menu
    • Learn to undertake serving food and drinks to customers
    • Clear, clean and tidy kitchen and Kafe area including:
    • Washing up and putting away crockery and cutlery Cleaning all surfaces in kitchen  Cleaning Kafe area
    • Sweeping and mopping in kitchen
    • On occasions operating the till and serving
    • Learn to use all equipment and ensure they are used correctly and monitored as required
    • To ensure that excellent standards of hygiene and cleanliness are maintained in/around the Kafé kitchen area at all times
    • To participate in supervision and training with the Kafé staff and attend training as required, including food hygiene

  • Volunteer Counter Assistant

    Role Title: Kilbryde Kafe Volunteer Counter Assistant

    Hours: To be agreed between volunteer and Kilbryde Kafe Cook to fit in with the needs of the volunteer and Kafé. (Hours may change to accommodate changes in staffing requirements within the kitchen).

    Base in: Kilbryde Hospice

    Role Purpose:

    To support the Kilbryde Hospice Catering Team at our Kafé in the hospice building

    Our Kafé is run as a social enterprise serving freshly prepared snacks and drinks. This is part of   Kilbryde Hospice and is open to anyone. The organisation serves the community of South Lanarkshire and offers support and care to people and their families with a life-limiting illness.

    The role focuses on taking orders, handling money, preparing drinks, clearing tables and serving customers. 

    Role Description:

    • To be enthusiastic and deliver an excellent customer experience in the Kafé
    • Learn to take orders, operate the till and handle money
    • Learn to prepare drinks and food as required
    • Learn to clean tables and wash dishes as required
    • Learn to undertake serving food and drinks to customers
    • Learn to use all equipment and ensure they are used correctly and monitored as required
    • To ensure that excellent standards of hygiene and cleanliness are maintained in/around the Kafé area at all times

    Role Title:                 Hairdresser/Barbour

    Location:                  Kilbryde Hospice, East Kilbride

    Role Overview:       This is a lovely opportunity to use your skills to support people to feel good at a difficult time, while developing your experience within a palliative healthcare environment.  Tasks will include, speaking to staff on each visit to ascertain if there is any patient specific information that you should be aware of, visit each patient to offer patient and visitor’s drinks and refresh water if required and introduce yourself as a volunteer hairdresser and the services you offer Services include: -Cutting -Straightening -Setting -Blow drying Volunteers are required to inform the Day Services Manager of any changes to their personal circumstances which may preclude them from meeting these requirements or their assigned duties.

    Commitment:           You’ll be able to commit once a week, or subject to patient needs.

    Skills & Experience:             Have good communication and listening skills, with people at all levels. Be able to demonstrate a positive, organised and flexible approach to the role and adapt to changing priorities as required. Cheerful demeanour and ability to work as part of a team. Maintain awareness and compliance with Kilbryde Hospice policy and procedures. Represent Kilbryde Hospice in a positive way. If you have SVQ Level 3 in Hairdressing, ideally with two years’ experience, this could be the perfect opportunity for you. Experience with patients is desirable but not essential, it’s more important to have empathy and enjoy meeting new people.

    Kilbryde Kafe / Inpatient Unit

     

    Main tasks:

    • Producing a nutritious menu
    • Preparing meals
    • Cooking  meals
    • Serving Meals
    • Ensuring the kitchen is kept tidy
    • Enabling the volunteers to assist in kitchen when appropriate
    • Record food temperatures while cooking
    • Following Cooksafe procedures

    Required skills, qualities and experience:

    • Catering /cooking experience
    • Experienced food handler
    • Knowledge of food hygiene practices
    • Ability to offer several options for meals and/or work from a limited menu
    • Patience and empathy
    • Good communicator
    • Ability to engage with people who use Kilbryde Hospice

    Where and when:

  • Volunteer Driver

    Principal Duties and Responsibilities

    Volunteer Driver

    Role Title:                 Volunteer Driver

    Location:                  Kilbryde Hospice, East Kilbride

    Role Overview:       Our Volunteer Drivers provide a vital lifeline to help people access our services. Volunteers drive patients from their home to Day Services and outpatient clinics.  This is so much more than a minibus journey – it gives patients the chance to get out of their houses, see their neighbourhood, see season changes and feel in touch with their local community. Patient transport is undoubtedly a form of unacknowledged therapy.

    Commitment:           We are looking for volunteer drivers to cover various shifts but generally you’ll be able to commit to one shift per week.

    Key Duties & What your role will involve:

    There are a number of different aspects involved in the volunteer driver role

    including;

    Journey Planning

    • Ensuring that your vehicle is safe for purpose and insured to undertake patient transportation
    • Liaising with the Hospice to find out what patient transport has been planned and carrying this out
    • Being aware that the nursing team will undertake an initial and on-going assessment of the patient ensuring their safety to be transported by a volunteer driver

    Patient Safety

    • Maintaining contact with the Hospice and informing the nursing team of any concerns you may have about the patient e.g. patient unwell on journey, changes in patient mobility, difficulties with access, driver safety in jeopardy, uncomfortable with passenger behaviour
    • You may offer assistance to a patient, but you are not expected to help them in and out of the vehicle. The nursing team will assist the patient at the Hospice.
    • Ensuring that every patient wears a seatbelt on every journey and adjusting head restraints to help protect patients against whiplash
    • Ensuring that patient information is stored appropriately in order to protect patient confidentiality

     Driver / Vehicle Safety

    • Ensuring that you are fit to drive at all times and informing the Hospice about any health issue or change in personal circumstance that may affect your driving ability
    • Upholding the reputation of the Hospice by ensuring safe and competent driving at all times e.g. drive within speed limits etc.
    • Complying with legislation and Hospice guidelines e.g. mobile phone use, drugs, drinking and driving, winter driving, fatigue, no smoking etc.
    • Ensuring that the vehicle you are driving is safe and legal
    • Complying with annual checks where required e.g. driving licence, insurance, MOT etc.
    • Reporting any incidents, accidents or near miss situations to the Hospice and following our procedures.

     Skills & Experience:          .

    • A competent, safe driver with a full UK driving licence and with use of a car (you must enjoy driving!)
    • Friendly, patient, and good with people
    • Cheerful, with a positive, professional attitude
    • Reliable and punctual
    • Flexible with the ability to manage personal emotions and stress
    • Experienced in providing community transport (this is not essential)
    • Knowledgeable about the geography of the local area with good navigational skills
    • Under 75 years of age (this is for insurance purposes)
    • Respectful of others and their diversity
    • Passionate about helping families in your local community
