Bobby Murdoch Memorial Cup 17/18

12 July, 2018

Last year Rutherglen and Cambuslang posties swapped their beat for the football pitch along with another 40 players from Chapman’s Bar, The Vogue, The Sportsmans and The Murdoch Family select to compete in the Bobby Murdoch Memorial Cup 2017.

Stonelaw Community pitches played host once again to the annual event that celebrates Rutherglen’s Greatest Son, Lisbon Lion, Bobby Murdoch. The event which raised £1,100 for Kilbryde Hospice was raised to fever pitch as this was the first year that the tournament was a close a call going into the final matches with the overall winner being The Vogue Bar.

Organiser Franny Conway said “this has been the first year we have gone into the last few games with the points being so close. The Vogue Bar ended up worthy winners although it has been noted that a change of manager from Paul McColl to Ian Brady may have been the winning factor here”.

Gordon McHugh Chief Executive of Kilbryde Hospice said “once again we have had a magnificent friendly atmosphere around all those who have taken part. I am watching guys on the sidelines who used to play in this competition now cheering on their own families which is an absolute joy to watch and shows the support towards Kilbryde Hospice by people from all over Rutherglen and Cambuslang”.

Bobby’s wife Kathleen and young Bobby junior watched all of the games and joined the footballers at Chapmans Bar in Rutherglen to award the winners with the trophy and also to remember the late great Bobby Murdoch.

“John Crozier of Chapmans Bar said “I can’t thank everyone enough for their continued support for this event. Bobby was a dear personal friend and this fundraising event is a great way of remembering one of our local hero’s even more so as the Lisbon Lions celebrate the 50th Anniversary of being the first British Team to win the European Cup”.

We are delighted to announce that the 2018 match will be held on Sunday 9th September at Newton Farm Parks
