Celebrating a Stalwart of Community Service : Gretta McGuinness Receives Prestigious Order of Mercy Award

20 August, 2024
We are thrilled to announce that one of our dedicated volunteers, Gretta McGuinness, was yesterday honoured with the distinguished Order of Mercy award.
This prestigious recognition, revived by the League of Mercy Foundation, celebrates outstanding voluntary service in assisting the relief of sickness and suffering.
Gretta received her award alongside her daughter Caroline and Professor Anne Hendry, Chair of Kilbryde Hospice Trustees.
Gretta McGuinness has been an integral part of Kilbryde Hospice since its inception. As a founding member and Trustee, she has devoted over twenty years of her retirement to the hospice’s promotion, establishment, and ongoing sustainability. At 86 years old, Gretta remains actively involved, participating in and supporting every event and activity initiated by the hospice.
In the late 1990s, Gretta and her late husband Tony recognised the need for a hospice in South Lanarkshire. They mobilised support from the local community, politicians, and business leaders, eventually establishing a charity in 2001 to fundraise for the hospice.
As a relentless fundraiser, Gretta collected funds daily in hospitals and shopping centres and spoke at schools, churches, and to public organisations. Their efforts raised over £1 million in a few short years.
Despite the personal loss of her husband, Gretta’s determination never wavered. She continued to dedicate her life to the hospice, becoming the first person to see the completed £4 million facility before its opening in 2015.
Gretta remains a vital part of the hospice as a Trustee, ensuring that the high standards of care are consistently maintained.
Our Chief executive Gordon McHugh said “They deserve a medal” is something we often say of those wonderful volunteers who have served their organisations and communities outstandingly. Gretta McGuinness truly exemplifies this sentiment.”
